PORT DESCRIPTION


 Location: The port of Suez is situated at the southern end of the Suez Canal, approx 170km S of Port Said.

 General overview: The bay is sheltered except from the S, providing a waiting anchorage area for vessels awaiting a pilot. The port consists of Port Ibrahim, providing berths for general cargo and passenger vessels; New Harbour, where facilities for tankers and livestock vessels are situated and Port Tewfik, used to accommodate passenger vessels in transit.

 Traffic figures: Approx 900 vessels are handled annually.

 Load Line zone: Tropical.

 

PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION


 ETA's: The initial ETA should be sent to the vessel's nominated,  7 days prior to arrival. Arrival confirmation should be sent 72 and 24 hours prior to arrival. The arrival confirmations should be sent through the protecting agent, if any, who will consequently convey messages and/or owner's instructions to and other involved parties.

 The ETA message should include:

1.       In addition to normal ETA (date and time of arrival) the type and quantity of cargo to be loaded/discharged should be advised.

2.       Arrival drafts forward and aft.

3.       Any requirements.

Documentation required: The following is required:

1.       Ship's certificates such as Registry, Radio Safety, Pollution, Construction, etc, which should be ready and valid on arrival. Originals will be collected by for the purpose of declaring the ship's arrival with the Mercantile Marine Bureau and issuing the permit of departure on completion of cargo operations.

2.       Crew Lists:

3.       Seaman Books of crew members which will be reviewed by the Immigration officer.

4.       Copies of Bills of Lading and Manifest.

5.       Bonded Stores List, collected on board by customs officer.

6.       Vaccination certificates, reviewed by health officials.

Cargo documents (copies of Bills of Lading and Manifest) should be in possession of  prior to ship's arrival for the purpose of approaching cargo receivers to enable them to manage the necessary formalities.

 Special forms, for completion by the Master, will be delivered to him by the pilot, immigration .

 Radio: Alexandria Radio is recommended for passing messages at long range.

 Inmarsat communication is possible.

 VHF: VHF ch 16.

 Health regulations: Free pratique is granted immediately on the ship's arrival if not coming from an infected area. Pratique cannot be applied for by radio.

 Derat Exemption certificates can be renewed if expired.

 Customs and immigration: Customs: On berthing, customs officers will attend to check the ship's bonded store according to the list prepared by the Master.

 There is no alcohol allowance for ships crews whilst in port, cigarettes only are allowed. Penalties for non compliance are large.

 Immigration: The immigration officer is the first person to board after the pilot, he checks the Seaman's Books and issues the shore permits for crew members. Nobody is allowed to board the vessel before the immigration clearance. Crew and/or passengers cannot leave the vessel before the attendance of the immigration officer.

 Flags: Hoisting of the Egyptian flag on arrival is essential. If the flag is not available on arrival the Master may request one, upon berthing.

 Notices of readiness: NOR should be tendered by cable, fax or telex on the ship's arrival off the port, then in writing when the  boards. Tendering is in accordance with the terms and conditions of the relative charter party.

 General notices & regulations: Vessels arriving with cargo to be discharged, or for loading cargo, will not be berthed unless receivers or shippers are ready with the necessary documents duly approved by the customs.

 

NAVIGATION


 

 Pilot: Compulsory within the specified pilotage zone.

 Tidal range and flow: Range 2.1m springs, 1.2m neaps.

 Dock density: 1030.

 Weather: Prevailing winds: S'ly.

 Charts: BA 233, 3214. Admiralty Pilot NP64.

 Restrictions: Movements take place during daylight only between 1300-1630hrs, passenger vessels are given priority. In addition no movements are permitted while traffic is entering or leaving the canal.

 Tugs: There are 22 tugs available from 140-3,200hp.

 

BERTHS AND CARGO


 

 Names/Nos: General cargo/Bulk berths: Port Ibrahim: Also known as Suez Docks, the port is divided into two basins, North and South, by a centre quay.

 The total water area is 40ha, the entrance width is 100m, with a depth of 8.23m at LW.

 North Basin: Berths No 1, 2 and 3: Length 425.5m, max draft 7.9m. Shed storage of 3,700m2 and stacking area of 11,500 m2 available.

 Berths No 4 and 5: Length 274m, max draft 3.35m. Lighterage and Customs quay. 1,900 m2 of stacking area available.

 Berth 6 Pilgrims Quay: Length 152m, max draft 7.3m. Shed storage of 1,946 m2 and stacking area of 5,900 m2 available.

 Berth 8 Khedival Quay: Length 137, max draft 7.47m. Shed storage of 784 m2 available.

 Berths 9, 10 and 11 Khedival Quay: Length 364m, max draft 7.47m. Stacking area of 8,580 m2 available.

 South Basin: Janera Quay Berths No 12, 13 and 14: Length 731.5m, max draft 5.2m. Berths 12, 6 and 13 are usually used as repair berths. Berth 14 is used by small commercial vessels. Stacking area of 2,700 m2 available.

 New Harbour: Cattle Jetty: Used for the handling of livestock, situated in the new port extension to the south. Port Tewfik:

 Marakeb Quay: Length 625m, max draft 8.2m. Used to accommodate passenger vessels in transit for the Suez Canal.

 Container berths: Containers are handled alongside the general cargo berths.

 Tanker berths: Petroleum Basin: There are 7 concrete jetties available for tankers up to 18,000dwt, 169m LOA and max draft 8.0m. Storage tanks are situated 3.3km to the W at the oil refinery.

 New Suez Terminal: Situated in the Suez roads, depth alongside 11.58m. Capable of accommodating vessels up to 228m in length.

 Ro-ro berths: Berths A, B and C North Quay: There are 3 stern-on berths for ro-ro vessels. Berths A and B can accommodate vessels up to 137m in length, max draft 7.6m. Berth C can accommodate vessels up to 122m in length, max draft 7.9m.
